In your career, is there any one, any thing or any emotion that effects you most?
There are many people effected me a lot, especially my friends.
When did you start to design independently?
After my graduation from university.
Is there any thing special while you are developing business in other places in China?
There were two phrases: first, Zhejiang businessmen invited us to design for them. Second, the developers and local governments in other places invited us to design. I think its nothing about conception. You can do anything you want if you have enough confidence and correct conception.
What are your advantages as a leader of a design office?
To me, I think three points are important: technology, management and operation.
What’s the most important thing in your work at present?
Abstracting company culture. The publication of Hesoms will come out in Jan.1,2007
What are the most complacent thing and the biggest headache in your work?
To be understood and misunderstood.
What is your philosophy and motto?
To be frank in life and serious in work. These words can instruct you to solve any problem and you will be understood sooner or later.
What is your dream for the future?
Personally speaking, I want to put my dreams into real fact. To the company, I hope it could be developed into a design group.
Pursue for grandness:
Jake Song reads every day. Now, he is reading “The Death and Life of Great American Cities”. Just like his craft brothers do, this book taught him a lot “This book is written by a writer but not an architect. It gives a deeper thought. These so called experts are destroying our cities and could not help themselves. In ancient China, those architectures like the Imperial Palace and Suzhou Garden are perfectly wonderful. The designers considered a lot of culture problems when designing. On the other hand, our architects now are not able to consider in a broad way. They could not take life and subsistence into consideration.
“Culture of architects” is very important to Jake Song. “What kind of culture an architect must have” is the question that Jake is thinking of recently.
“Governments, developers and designers are giving common effect to our city development. It’s far from enough for an architect who only have knowledge about construction. Besides that, a real architect must take social economy, human behavior, government operation, history and culture into consideration. It is not only related to art but also to social problems.”
“I pursue for grandness in my design. Our projects are the largest in the local places. Most of them are in the center of cities. We had to study local culture, art and how melt buildings with modern life. In a simple word, we created unique atmosphere by pursuing grandness.”
Advantages:
Regarding to the management of the company, Jake Song thought “there is a big problem in Chinese offices. The partnership of offices is easy to be disjointed and to be ended. It always happens that the one which is skillful in architecture is weak in management and need to find a manager, or it is weak in communication and operation ability. In this situation, the best architect won’t be the head of an office, so the balance between these three people will be broken and the disaggregating followed.”
This year, Jake Song analyzed the situation with the stuff. “We will give different opportunities to different people who is doing different work. Sometimes I just joked with them. I said I am the one who was cultivating leader for the office. Everyone had a chance as long as they were ready. To constructional units, I consider on their stand. So it should be our advantage. ”
Expansion:
Hersoms, which is constructed in Dec.2004 in Zhejiang, has built its sub-office in Jiangsu and Guangxi in only 2 years. Jake Song said “Nowadays, a lot of offices are without strong roots, even some one in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing and United States. It’s hard to say if their future is definitely clear. They spent a lot of energy on operation but we needn’t. Design company is a company whose most important task is profit making. Only in this way, we are able to cultivate more good employees and make good designs. We have formed our own mode like I mentioned above. We have to construct a lot of basement by our designs and guarantee the profit of our businessmen and provide a platform for different people.”
