Some people say that Chinese designers’ name are rarely seen in the domestic important projects in China, like Beijing Bird;s Nest Olympic Swimming Pool designed by Switzer Herzog or Shanghai Grand Theater which looks like a big bowl dish designed by a French Charpen-tier. Then, where are the Chinese designers?
City is a emotional location of culture and living. Chinese city architectures not only need to be sustained by imagination from our Chinese architects but also need to be expressed by the pencil of them.
A mater piece of architecture is the same as the beautiful poem written on the earth.
The reporter know an “earth poet”, a young Chinese architect, whose name is Song Jianliang.
Mr. Song is making a speech about his glory design of “Paris Metropolis” when we met him. Mr. Song said conformably “As a architect, our task is solving problems. When you got a project, the designing process is equal to a process of continuously solving problems. There are no two problems which are totally the same, so there are not two design totally the same. ” The design we named “Paris Metropolis” is a vigorous work that will surly be the center for residents and cultural activities.
Be born in Shengzhou, an eastern city of Zhejiang, Mr. Song Jianliang had been living in a water and mountainous county which is connected Hangzhou in the north and next to Ningbo in the east since he was a little child. He was ever been the project director of a national design office after his graduation from Architectural school of Dongnan University in Nanjing. Maybe because of his life experiences in rural place, he is not like to be “chained”. In order to fully apply his knowledge and reach his dream, his gave up his golden work without any hesitation and set up his own design office named “Hesoms”.
Mr. Song said that good city architects should pursue for its depth and extent. It could be understood from three aspects, namely engineer, aesthetics and philosophy. If the design was able to meet the psychological demand of residents, it had reached the best level of urban residence.
The journalist found that Mr. Song seems passionate to every aspect of nature sight, architectural space, trees and sunshine. His design is not only a simple space but a kind of cultural conception. Besides his abundant culture accumulation, his excellent ability of fuse different human culture, psychology, folk and customs made a harmonization between architectures, human beings and nature.
On the basis of the project of Jiang Nan New World in Liuzhou of Guangxi Province, Song Jianliang precisely arranged the corresponding relationship of Liujiang River, river shore garden and mountain with city environment after several times spot viewing. In the general layout, he bravely reserved land for the square to echo the river shore park, and show the harmonization between the environment and constructions by the management of the contour line of the buildings and the background mountain.
Song Jianliang mainly used the elegant and civil neoclassicism of minority in Guangxi: erect sides are warm colored, local stone for the base, butter yellow in the middle and dark tiles on the top.
Construct Paris Metropolis in Jiaxing
Everyone who see the project of “Paris Metropolis” which has won the “best residential planning award of urban residence in China” of 2004 will be shocked by its grand vigor. Actually, its success is mainly in four aspects: first, introducing the romantic leisure culture of Paris; second, building well constructed city fixture; third, showing diversification in the design; last but not least, the contribution of beautiful environment to the city.
With the construction area of 700,000㎡, Paris Metropolis could be the largest comprehensive real estate project in Jiaixing at present. Paris Metropolis is themed in “deduct international life, create city honor”, taking “construct top ranking buildings, build products with unique characters” as its service tenet. The whole housing project is consisted by water house, scenic apartment, single apartment, shopping mall, commercial leisure walking street, experimental primary school and kindergarten.
Mr. Song has been made full use of the local characteristics of this piece of land to form a central viewing road from north to south and Seine recreation area from east to west. Unique Zhonglou Walking Street in Taiyuan of Shanxi
The rebuilding project of Zhonglou Walking Street of Taiyuan in Shanxi occupies totally 300,000㎡. Its planning includes Zhonglou Street and the surrounding. After having walked Liu Xiang, Jiefang Road and Chayuan Road for several times, facing to the ancient Jin-Shang Culture, Mr. Song relied on his courage which had been exceed boundary as an urban planner perfected the a large scale of civil planning layout but maintained the ancient houses kept down from Ming and Qing Dynasty.
Song Jianliang thought that Zhonglou Street had got commercial atmosphere, so he took the mode of combining the traditional commercial street which is closely related to civil planning together with modern commercial center. For example:
protect the original layout of the roads and historical architectures;
- add the third industry establishment (including commercial establishment and service establishment), cultural establishment and traveling establishment;
- build parks, squares and city public space in the streets with a large area;
- construct stereo walking street, increase exits and entrances as the paths to underground facilities to reconstruct the surface transportation;
Song Jianliang said, “I love the most basic view in between the earth and sky---architecture. The secret of architecture is perfectly combining the earth and sky. Sometimes the relationship of buildings is beginning from outline. My design idea is to the make Zhonglou Street of Taiyuan into Taiyuan’s living room.”
The Star Hotel in Gansu Dangchang
Show “Lu Xun’s house” in the development of economy and tourism of the county. This is the keynote of Song Jianliang made for “Shaoxing Hotel” in Dangchang of Gansu Province.
According to the standard of 4 star hotel, themed in “the paths running sinuously amidst the peaks”, Mr. Song blended a lot of architectural conceptions of classical garden in Jiangnan in the national park of forest.Mr. Song reasonably arranged the layout of the corridors and water garden, attach importance to elegance in the style, try his best to use the local material on the outer wall and organically combine Jiangnan classical garden art with the ethnic features in high slop area to construct the only one model star hotel for traveling and holiday in this county.
There are abundance tourism resources in Dangchang, but its laggard basic infrastructure blocked the development of the local tourism. Mr. Song fully considered that when designing. The four floor hotel totally has 800 beds in all the middle or high class rooms.
Shaoxing Hotel, which was built according to the mode of Liuxun’s house will surely be the most unique archaize garden hotel in Gansu and even in the northwest area and will be an attractive view in Dangchang.
In Song Jianliang’s opinion, designers should not only respect modernity and contemporary contemporaneity but also should make more efforts to find answers in the local resources when doing their design work. In this way, they are able to excellent works that abreast of the time.
Jingang. Century International in Xinghua of Jiangsu
Xinghua, a town full of fish and rice in the economic region of Changjiang Delta, is an ancient city with history of more than 2000 years. In Song’s eyes, this is another beautiful poem he wrote. With the totally area of 478,000㎡, the project is located in the city center. It stars from the most prosper commercial street Pailou Road in the north, only 200 meters away from the municipal government, connects to Changan Road in the east, near Canglang Garden.
Song is making great efforts to construct this project into a symbolic center of Xinghua with special characters. His concept will be realized in the aspects below:
- protect culture relics and ancient houses, respect local history and culture, enhance culture deposit;
- reasonably make use of water system, pay attention to environment art which is originated from nature but high in nature, theme in water view and green, center in the city and fuse buildings, water view, greenbelt and roads on the background of buildings;
- pay attention to the research of space arrangement and visual effect, enlarge the coverage of greenbelt in the square, and create continuous river shore sight to form perfect city landscape.
construct correct and convenient traffic system, give a full consideration of the relationship between car and people and people’s visual and psychological requirement to space transform.
- Song Jianliang analyzed that to be a city center should own three points as below: first, local history and culture; second, nature landscape; third, compatibility and sustainable development of the city architecture.

Amazing Dali Nanguo City in Yunnan
